What are you seeing? What kind of rock is it? What kind of fossil is it? Why is this kind of rock so special (aside of the fossil)?

The fossil is rather difficult to recognise but this is the best I could do. To give you a hint. This is not a complete fossil. A big part is missing but what is there is enough to recognise it for what it is. Also the rock is slightly more grey than can be seen on a foto. Thus are the limitations of digital cameras I guess.

It looks a bit like coal, and honestly, I'm not that good with fossils!
I am not giving away too much when I say that dispite looking like coal it is not.
gilsonite?
Just organic rich shale then? I've seen similar rocks surrounding coal deposits in PA.
No one seems to be coming anywhere close to any fossils! Maybe it's a part of a bone.
Mel is basicly right when thinking about an organic rich shale. This one is from Eastern Germany. The partial fossil should be a clue to what kind of shale because these are well known for them and...
Silver Fox is (almost) right when thinking of "bones".
Mel definitly is right about an organic shale however, there is more to this sample than that.
I'm not sure if I should give more clues or resolve completely.
I'll resolve: It is a piece of shale from the "Kupferschiefer" that stretches from Germany into Poland and has/is being mined for mainly Cu. The partial fossil is the head of a fish showing eye, mouth and some other fishbones. I think it can also be classified as a black shale in some areas. Will try to make a more detailed post on the weekend maybe.
